IRISH AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH INITIATIVE

This email is a Call to Action regarding Irish American Heritage Month (IAHM) at the Federal level. I am providing background information, a Mission Statement, a Vision Statement, an Outcomes Statement, the first call to action itself, and ways to contact the below cited Federal cultural institutions.

AOH Division members: I ask that you please take the below actions by the end of October. This call to action is also being conducted by the Maryland State Board, AOH. AOH action on Project IAHM over the long-term is critically important for current and future generations to understand and appreciate the significant sacrifices and contributions of Irish Americans to the development of the United States of America!

In Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity,

Slainte’ Jay McCarthy
President, Virginia AOH State Board

BACKGROUND: ·

U.S. Presidents have proclaimed March as IAHM from 1991 through 2020 for thirty consecutive years. However, a federal public law does not exist which requires the President to proclaim March as Irish American Heritage Month each year. Accordingly, U.S. Presidents have decided to proclaim the month on their own each year. The following three Federal cultural institutions created presences on their homepages during the months of March in the below cited years. These presences linked to webpages which provide many excellent Irish American resources. (It is very important to understand that these webpages and resources continue to exist even though there are not currently presences on the homepages of the institutions.): o Library of Congress (LOC) during March 2018, 2019, and 2020;o Smithsonian Institution (SI) during March 2018, 2019, and 2020;o National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) during March 2019 and 2020.
·
The current webpage addresses which contain the resources for the three Federal cultural institutions are:
o LOC: www.loc.gov/rr/main/irishamerican/ Also, the LOC Law Library has included IAHM onto its list of commemorative observations at the following webpage: www.loc.gov/law/help/commemorative-observations/irish-american
o SI: www.si.edu/spotlight/irish-american
o NARA: www.archives.gov/news/topics/irish-american-heritage

MISSION STATEMENT: It is of paramount importance that AOH members communicate with emails and letters when directed by the Virginia AOH State Board President which will: Result in the continuation and addition to the resources provided by the LOC, SI, and NARA on their webpages; result in other Federal agencies using the resources of the three Federal cultural institutions on their social media during IAHM.
VISION STATEMENT: AOH members will always be diplomatic, patient, and persistent with communications during the execution of the Mission. OUTCOMES: The success of this long-term project will result in the significant increase of visibility, understanding, and appreciation of the Irish American heritage, history, and culture by current and future generations of Americans.
CALL TO ACTION NO. 1: This first call to action has two parts: 1. I request that AOH members simply go to the webpage addresses of the three Federal cultural institutions to review, read about, and enjoy the provided resources; 2. I request AOH members to then contact each of the three Federal cultural institutions via email or postal service to thank them for the resources and to suggest that the institutions add resources to the webpages over future years. You may also want to inform them about subjects or content on their webpages which you particularly enjoy.
