100 Years Ago This Week In The Irish Civil War

12 July fighting continues in Limerick, Anti-Treaty combatants take 47 Free State troops in east of the county

13 July fight for the Limerick Free State outpost of the Munster Tavern (it’s still there!)

15 July fight for Strand Barracks, which were Republican-held (handed over to them in March as part of truce agreement) & King John’s Castle in Limerick

16 July Free State troops capture Anti-Treaty commander Frank Aiken & 300-400 of his men in Dundalk (County Louth)

17 July Free State general Eoin O’Duffy (future leader of the Blueshirts) arrives in Limerick with 1500 troops

Anti-Treaty forces also took lumps in Kildare, Laois & Donegal but had successes in Sligo & Clare
