100 Years Ago This Week In The Irish Civil War

22 August National Army Commander-in-Chief Michael Collins killed in an ambush of his convoy near his home by Anti-Treaty IRA in Beal na Blath in County Cork. Ambush was planned at Long’s Pub (now The Diamond Bar) after Collins’ crew had asked an IRA sentry for directions, and Collins was recognized (I knew asking for directions just leads to trouble).

Word was that there were plans of meeting with IRA biggies Dan Breen & Liam Deasy
to discuss peace plans, but like many things that went down during this period, the facts are clear as mud. We will never know how the history of Ireland would have changed if Collins had survived.

A commemoration was held this Sunday the 21st , as has been held each year.

22 August also this day, coincidentally, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a “secret police” unit was officially formed…this was created by Michael Collins

26 August 2 senior officers of the Fianna Eireann (Irish Boy Scouts who aided
the Volunteers during the Civil War) were abducted & killed in Dublin by the CID

27 August Anti-Treaty ambushes in Tipperary & Kerry
