100 Years Ago This Week In The Irish Civil War

29 March Republicans attempt to burn and lay a land mine in Burton Hall, the home of the Guinness family, one of whom is a senator. The fire fails to ignite and the mine is defused by Free State troops.

31 March A Pro-Treaty army report from Claremorris, Co. Mayo states “Despite their very considerable numbers, and ample equipment in Mayo, the Irregulars have not been inclined to indulge in military action. Extensive destruction of roads, raiding, looting, and the burning of the houses of supporters of the Government is the form their warfare continues to take.”

31 March The Kilkenny People report the Free State’s projected revenue and expenditure for the year. Expenditure was estimated to be £42 million (£10.8m on compensation; £10.6m on the army) and estimated revenue was £26 million. This left a large deficit.

1 April Day One of Ireland’s New Customs Border

1 April The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) decides it’s an inopportune time to remove its foreign games ban rule.

6 April In Kerry, Free State troops mount an operation aimed at rescuing Cornelius Hannafin, an informer held by the Anti-Treaty IRA. They raid a village at Derrynafeana near Carrauntoohil, where he is being held. Three Anti-Treaty fighters are killed in a resulting skirmish and two more captured. The National Army claims a total of nine Anti-Treaty fighters were killed. Most of the IRA column gets away into the mountains. Hannifin is freed. He had previously been made to dig his own grave prior to his imminent execution.

9 April A meeting takes place in Belfast of Nationalist MPs; councillors and businessmen. The meeting reviewed the plight of the minority in Northern Ireland and criticised the indifference of Free State government. Decided to seek meeting with Cosgrave.
