MAY DIVISION BUSINESS MEETING TUE 5/9 7p @ ST. MICHAEL'S

100 Years Ago This Week In The Irish Civil War

25 April Monsignor Luzio, who had come to Ireland from Rome on a peace mission after appeals to the Pope from Anti-Treaty leaders, is recalled again to Rome on this day. The Pro-Treaty government sees his mission as implicitly against them and therefore will have nothing to do with Monsignor Luzio.

27 April Anti-Treaty Army Council (Aiken, Barry and Pilkington) and Government of Irish Republic (de Valera, Ruttledge, Colivet and O’Callaghan) decide that all offensive operations should be suspended from noon on Monday 30th April. De Valera as President also issued a proclamation of the basis on which they were prepared to negotiate with the Pro-Treaty Government. These terms are not accepted by Pro-Treaty government.

27 April New political party Cumann na nGaedhael formed in the Free State. Ten years later would merge with other parties into Fine Gael.

3 May Senators Andrew Jameson and James Douglas (two Southern Unionists) meet with de Valera but he refuses to acknowledge Pro-Treaty Government as legitimate government. De Valera also said that there would be no surrender of arms. However, Douglas said that his bearing was ‘that of a defeated man’. De Valera’s peace terms are rejected by Pro-Treaty Government who forward their own proposals.

7 May De Valera forwards to Pro-Treaty Government amended terms for peace but they are rejected on the 8th May.
