If you haven’t attended one of these commemorations, I highly recommend it. It’s worth the trip – bring the family!
Battle of Fredericksburg Sunday, December 15, 11:30AM at the City Dock, 201 Sophia Street, Fredericksburg
In the Footsteps of the Irish Brigade
Presenter: NPS Historian Frank O’Reilly does a magnificent job narrating the scene using the words of Thomas F. Meagher. The 28th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and other re-enactors are usually there as well.
We try to be there about 15 minutes early. The Meagher Division will present a boxwood wreath at the monument. This is an event appropriate for green jacket
Limited parking is available at the City Dock, but you’re more likely to find a space in the nearby parking lot associated with the RR station.
Note: After the ceremony, NPS Ranger O’Reilly leads and narrates a “Remembrance” walk through the streets of Fredericksburg, the route the Irish Brigade used marching to the battle at the Sunken Road.
If you’re unable to participate in the walk, join several Hibernians at the Colonial Tavern -- Home to the Irish Brigade -- for brunch (or whatever). The Tavern is located on Lafayette (front side of the RR Station) a short walk from the City Dock.
