100 Years Ago This Week In The Irish Civil War


7 November Civilian William Aherne was shot as a suspected spy by the Anti- Treaty IRA, and body dumped on the roadside in Bishopstown, Cork.

8 November Anti-Treaty IRA attack Wellington Barracks (late renamed “Griffith Barracks” after Arthur Griffith) with machine gun fire leaving 5 dead

10 November Republican Head of Propaganda, Erskine Childers, one of the more interesting characters of this time in Irish history, was captured in his old home Glendalough House in County Wicklow He had been on the run since the start of the Civil War and had arrived in Wicklow from a 200-mile journey by bicycle from Kerry before a planned meeting with Eamon de Valera. The charge on him was possession of a pistol which was a gift from Michael Collins before the pro-treaty provisional government was formed.
